The durability and mechanical and hydraulic properties of geotextile products makes them ideal for separation and filtration applications in construction work.

A strong and permeable geotextile membrane is placed between soils of different gradings. This helps prevent the intermixing of solid particles between the layers of soil, yet still

permits water to flow freely. Terram nonwoven geotextiles provide an effective solutions to the age-old problem of constructing stable granule layers over soft.

The Problem

Construction materials can be adversely effected if soils are allowed to intermix because there is no effective separation medium. For example: the load-bearing capacity of a road will be greatly reduced if fine-grained subgrade soil particles intermingle with the road’s granular sub-base.

In these circumstances, two answers that may have been considered in the past are
i) excavating the subgrade to increase the depth of sub-base material, or
ii) using punching-in rock. Both options are timeconsuming and represent a waste of     costly materials.

The Solution

The tensile strength and filter characteristics of Terram Geotextiles make them ideal for material separation purposes - here’s why:
Geotextiles prevent the contamination of granular material
They make it easier to spread granular material over soft areas
They minimise the need for excavation and replacement of the original ground
They reduce the loss of granular material into the subgrade i.e it prevents inter mixing ofgranule layer with the soft subgrade.
They allow work to continue during bad weather
They make development feasible where traditional construction methods would be uneconomic
More open grading can be specified for sub-base materials
Initial fill layers can be placed over particularly soft ground, using stronger fabrics

Terram geosynthetics materials are used in a wide range of applications in construction and maintenance.

Terram nonwoven geotextiles are extensively used for separation of the track ballast from the sub grade and drainage purpose at the track edge.Heavy weight Terram 4000 has been used for many years in combination with a sand layer to reduce contamination of the track ballast caused by ‘pumping’.

Drainage composite materials are used in similar situations where the rapid removal of subsurface water is essential
